Chemistry ques. re: writing electron configurations?

Okay when writing electron configurations why at one point does it go from 3p6, 4s2 3d10 and then 4p4? Why is 3d in the middle of the configuration? I am so confused and don't know how I'll remember when this happens? HELP - quiz tonite!
