Do onto others as you would have them do onto you is not divine?

That is not the best translation of the scripture because it can denote exactly what you mentioned. The best translation is, "All things, therefore, that you want men to do to YOU, YOU also must likewise do to them; this , in fact, is what the Law and the Prophets mean." NWT. Once again it show what a heavy responsibility those have who translate the Bible. Your point also has the flaw of not taking into account other scriptures that say not to murder. The difference between the two translations is about taking on a humble attitude toward others and even if they don't do something for you you should do it first to make peace or happiness grow.
